Why get a Mammogram?
A mammogram is the best available method to detect breast cancer early. The survival rate for breast cancer caught in its earliest stage is approximately 97%. The American Cancer society recommends that women age 40 and older should have yearly mammograms for as long as they are in good health. If you have a family history of breast cancer, talk to your doctor about when you should start having mammograms.
Why choose 3D Mammography?
A conventional 2D Mammogram can be limiting due to overlapping layers of tissue in the breast. This creates the need for call backs, or additional mammogram images, to evaluate the overlapping layers of tissue. For many women this means heightened anxiety about your annual breast exam. A 3D Mammogram is superior to 2D because it allows us to view the breast layer by layer—1mm at a time. This creates better detailed images, increasing early breast cancer detection by 41% and decreasing the amount of call backs by 40%. 3D Mammography means better imaging and decreased anxiety and concern for the patient.
Why choose CVH for my 3D Mammogram?
Our staff are very kind, compassionate, and professional. We know you value your time and we are committed to providing a quick and comfortable exam. Our staff is prepared to answer any questions or concerns you may have.
The 3D Mammography machine is also equipped with the ability to do both 2D and 3D images simultaneously in one exposure, with low dose radiation. This gives the radiologist a 2D image to compare to your previous exam and the 3D image for the layer by layer examination. Research has proven that the combination of both 2D and 3D Mammography finds the most cancers and decreases call back rates significantly.
In additional to bringing the industry standard of mammography to North Logan, Cache Valley Hospital is only location in the valley that has an Upright Biopsy Guidance System. If women are called back for a biopsy, instead of lying face down, they now have a more comfortable option of sitting upright during their breast biopsy procedure.
Is the 3D Mammography exam any different for me?
No. The exam remains the same from the patient’s point of view. The same positioning and compression applies to a 3D Mammogram. Remember that the compression should be uncomfortable, never painful. The point of compression is not to torture you, it is to decrease the thickness of the breast, decreasing radiation dose, and increasing image clarity.
Does a 3D Mammogram cause an increase in radiation dose?
No. The exam delivers a low dose of radiation, well within FDA guidelines, that is comparable to a 2D Mammogram. The exposure time is less than 4 seconds per image. In fact, our 3D Mammography exam is the only FDA approved exam that is superior for women with dense breasts compared to 2D Mammography alone.
Who is the 3D Mammography mammogram good for?
Everyone! If you are a concerned patient with dense breasts, are at high risk for breast cancer, or have a personal history of breast cancer, this exam will give you a better look the first time and leave you with the peace of mind knowing that you breast was examined 1mm at a time!
