A mammogram is an x-ray examination of the breast. It is the best available method to detect breast cancer early. The survival rate for breast cancer caught in its earliest stage is approximately 97%. There is a large difference between breast cancers that are caught early and those that have spread. Early detection is the best protection. The American Cancer society recommends that women age 40 and older should have yearly mammograms for as long as they are in good health. If you have a family history of breast cancer, talk to your doctor about when you should start having mammograms.
Digital mammography takes an electronic image of the breast and stores it on the computer. For the patient digital mammography is the same in that breast compression and radiation are needed to create images of the breast. Our digital mammography system has compression paddles that compress to the shape of the breast allowing for more uniform breast compression. We also use a mammo-pad, which is a soft warm pad that creates a more comfortable exam.
Some of the advantages of Digital Mammography are:
- Digital mammography uses less radiation than film mammography
- Computer software is used to help interpret mammograms
- Images can be enhanced and manipulated for a more accurate detection of breast cancer
- The images can be easily stored and transferred
- Shorter exam time
- Faster image acquisition
- Improved contrast between dense and non-dense tissue
- Ability to correct over exposure and under exposure of images without repeating mammograms
